Trusting in God: In the Midst of Our Finite Understanding

SPIRITUAL WELLNESS

This is one of the most popular Bible verses ever, but may be one of the hardest to live by.

Why is trust so hard? Maybe because many of us already have made up in our minds how our life is going to go. We have full business plans, applications for jobs, 5 year goals, etc. that have NOT been submitted to God and we are DETERMINED for things to go OUR way.

There is this lurking temptation to feel more secure in what is visually in our face versus in a God that we cannot physically see!

Provers 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight."

See Proverbs 19:21 - "Many plans are in a person's heart, but the Lord's decree will prevail!"

From experience, I know that it is such a common thing for us as God's children to set out to do a thing according to OUR plan just for God to completelyyyy flip it around and HE do the thing according to His!

Consider this:

  • Our brains are finite.

  • Our thinking is finite.

  • Our bodies, money, success, are finite.

  • Our knowledge, wisdom, and understanding is ignorance in comparison to the Lord's!!!

There are some things that we will just never fully know and comprehend in this life. There are some things we'll never get clarity on. There are some people we'll never get closure with. So just because something "doesn't make sense" to US, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense to God! But it DOES make sense to have faith in the One who sees beyond all the limitations that this world has.

Here are some questions for you to reflect on:

  1. What makes it hard for YOU to trust in God?

  2. In what areas are you not trusting God?

  3. Do you trust God more than you trust in yourself?...your gifts and capabilities?...your money?

  4. What is a practical/tangible way that you can begin to submit your plans to God before acting on them?

If you find yourself struggling with this, here's a good place to start: Admit/Confess to God that this is an issue for you by saying "God, I am finding it hard to trust you with __." and He will meet you right there! God cannot help you with something that you refuse to admit that you need help with.

Be blessed!
